When the rack-and-pinion is in a power-steering program, the rack includes a slightly different design.
Part of the rack contains a cylinder with a piston in the middle. The piston is linked to the rack. There are two liquid ports, one on either aspect of the piston. Providing higher-pressure fluid to one side of the piston forces the piston to go, which in turn movements the rack, offering the power assist.
